Typology Architecture received Commendation for F.C.T Alterations in the Heritage category at the 2026 ACT Australian Institute of Architecture awards.

We are surprised and excited to receive a commendation at the 2026 awards in June. The event, taking place at the National Film and Sound Archive, gives the public and peers the chance to recognise innovative work in the ACT by local and interstate architects.

The F.C.T Alterations was a challenging yet rewarding project, improving the livability, efficiency and amenity of a Federal Capital Commission cottage in the Wakefield Gardens Precinct.

The jury provided the following citation:

“F.C.T Alterations by Typology Architecture carefully respects the original Federal Capital Commission house while enabling multi-generational, mixed-ability living. New interventions honour the existing form and fabric without being slavishly deferential: what is new is clearly legible, and it remains restrained from the critical front vista.

The design responds closely to the family’s day-to-day use, providing accessibility indoors and out to support ageing-in-place for an older parent within the confines of the FCT house. Delivered on a tight budget, it invests in practical upgrades alongside moments of delight, including improved window treatments that significantly lift thermal performance. The result is a happy client with an outcome that meets their functional needs as well as their aesthetic preference.”
